Anonymous is a group formed off of the image board on 4chan in 2003. They are sometimes referred to as a digitalized global brain that practices hacktivism. Anonymous has no leader and relies on the collective power of its individual participants acting in such a way that the net effect benefits the group. As the name suggests the identities of the individual members of the group are not known. Anonymous has been involved in several high-profile incidents but two of the most publicized are the incidents with Bank of America in which they publicized documents allegedly containing evidence of “corruption and fraud”, and their attack on the church or Scientology, detail of which can be seen here.
